Consult for Non-Criminal Hospitalization

Insight and strategies for families of those involuntarily hospitalized.

  • 1 hour
  • 325 US dollars
  • Telephone Conference

Service Description

A one-hour session with S. Derek Johnson-Gage, Esq. during which he will help provide insight on the law with respect to psychiatric hospitalizations in Georgia, potential strategies to expedite the process, and practical considerations of involuntary hospitalization with respect to the patient and his or her mental health challenges, including how the family can support her moving forward to avoid future emergency commitments. Before booking, it is important to know the purposes and limitations of this consultation. While the statutory constructs for psychiatric hospitalization are voluminous, they are also archaic and convoluted. Furthermore, while there are statutory mechanisms of which a patient may avail himself, the procedural structure for these tools is often scarce and, in some cases, non-existent. The overarching goal of this service is to provide you, the family and friends of those committed patients, a primer on the law, but more importantly the practical tools that might help you better navigate a very challenging system that precariously combines a healthcare service mandated by statute with a profit-making business. These tools may or may not end up helping to expedite a patient's discharge, or to help you as family gather more information on his or her care. But, they are based on almost two decades of practicing in and around this field and are meant to arm you as much as possible in your role as representative and advocate. If you keep your expectations within these parameters, this should be a helpful service to you. If you are expecting a silver bullet to secure your loved one's release, you may want to take pause and consider reviewing the other materials on the law and practices regarding psychiatric hospitalization we have shared throughout our website.
